Our time up the Gunflint Trail is going to be split into two posts, this one about things we did around the trail and the second one will focus on our stay at Voyageur's Canoe Outfitters...
Our first stop while driving up the trail was a short hike up and around Honeymoon Bluff...
Like it says, it's a bluff, so you start the hike going up (and end it coming down)...
Love seeing signs like these...
Other than this downed tree across the trail, it was an easy hike...easier than most on the Gunflint...
Once at the top, you get great scenic views overlooking two different lakes...
Like I said, it was a easy hike...very few bugs too, a bonus...
Then we have to stop at two signs (I take pictures here as a record of their growth)...the first is the divide that separates water from to the Superior watershed and water that flows to the Hudson Bay watershed...
The second sign we stop at is the Gunflint Lake overlook...that's Gunflint Lake in the distance, beyond the lake is Canada...
There are many things to do on the Gunflint, the one we like to do the most while hiking is pick berries...June has strawberries...Raspberries are hit or missed throughout the summer...blueberries are early August...
Lex likes them...
You can pick (and immediately eat) as many as you want...
Typically we camp at the Trails End Campground, we didn't this trip, but we still did some exploring there. To get there we had to paddle a couple of miles...we used the campground area as a place to stretch our legs...
Lex went ahead with the berry picking...this was one of the raspberries she found...
Then we climbed to another scenic overlook...
The night we left the Gunflint, we went to a great beach on Seagull Lake that we've visited for years...it's incredibly shallow for a long distance into the lake. All the lakes up the Gunflint are bedrock controlled, large areas of sand like this do not occur in many areas here...
But we like it...
And I'm sure we'll be back to this beach again next year...
The best part of the Gunflint is that you are well out of cellular service...the whole time your phone doesn't work, it essentially because a camera as long as you have a charge...the quiet is nice...
