One of the many firsts for Lex on this trip was seeing Canada...well...there it is, in the background across the lake...
Before getting to Grand Marais, we stopped at the Pincushion Mountain overlook to talk about what a tombolo is and how it makes up Grand Marais...
Back in Grand Marais, it was time to get throwing rocks into the lake...
And then we explored Artist Point and the entry to the harbor...
Both Lukie and I were very careful to not tell Lex to be careful...a thin breakwater leads to the lighthouse and the cold lake is on each side...we didn't want her falling in...
You get some great views of the Sawtooth Mountains from the lighthouse...
Like I said...it's not a very wide breakwater to or from the lighthouse...
Behind these two is an awful lot of water...and probably Copper Harbor, Michigan...
Also, before we left Grand Marais...we picked something up that we've been talking about for quite awhile...
It proved to be a huge hit...I only spent ten minutes in the hammock by myself, before I was essentially kicked out...
We camped that night at Judge C.R. Magney State Park, north of Grand Marais...Lukie and I had been there before, we got kicked out when the government shut down seven or eight years ago...
Of course one of the goals was to take the hiking club trail...
Lukie had completed the hike that year...Kieran and I turned back because he really had to use the bathroom...so most of the hike was new to me...
These benches proved useful on the return trip...
There are an awful lot of steps...a lot...
Along the way, you can stop at a relatively small waterfall...
The hike takes you to the 'Devil's Kettle,' where half of the Brule River falls and continues on its way and the other half falls into a pothole and goes...who-knows-where...it was a mystery for a long time, they put dye, rubber duckies, etc., down the kettle and never found where it came out. It was assumed that the bedrock is fractured enough that the water going through the kettle re-joins the river at some point and that was proven true a few years ago...
Of course we found the password...
Lukie didn't remember seeing it, but he will now...and I bet Lex does too...
I told you there were a lot of steps right?
Breaks around the river were appreciated...
Because when you go down steps...you have to go back up...
The end of our hike, re-crossing the Brule, heading for camp...
You can see our hike here...
It was a busy day...Lukie was tired...
It's all about making memories right!?!
