Because you have to throw rocks into the lake...
After packing camp up we headed north, we were going to be camping a couple of nights at Trail's End on the Gunflint Trail, but before going up the Gunflint we had a couple of stops to make. First, we stopped at Cut Face Creek just south of Grand Marais, to throw some rocks...
And do some exploring...
But mostly, it was just to throw rocks...
Then we headed up to Grand Portage State Park to see the highest waterfall in Minnesota (we share it with Canada, the highest waterfall within Minnesota is on the Baptism River) and do the hiking club trail.
But first, Lukie and Lex tried to point to Grand Portage (in the NE) and Blue Mounds (in the SW) to show that we've been to the each corner within the last month. We have no plans to get to the NW or SE this year...
Then it was time to hike...the easiest hike we'll have...pavement and boardwalk for a mile roundtrip...
But the waterfall is cool...Canada is on the right, Minnesota on the left...
The password is right at the end of the trail...
Lukie and Kieran had been here before, back in 2011...things have changed since then...
You can see the easy hike here...
Then it was back to Grand Marais for lunch at Sven and Ole's...and of course to skip some rocks again...
Eventually it was time to head up the Gunflint...we got to talk about how water flows in Minnesota...
And we explored our campsite...we had to walk into the site about 500 feet, which wasn't bad because the view was worth it...Lukie and Lex quickly identified rocks that they could sit on...
We took a short walk to see some rapids that connect two lakes...
And had dinner...it got cool there...low 50s at night, high was never higher than 75...it was perfect...
We had a great view of the sunset...Lex kept repeating "this is beautiful" over and over...she loved it. Lukie liked it too, but eventually said "Lexy! We get it, it's beautiful. Now stop!"
Camping with these two is great, they are two very different people...Lukie will always be in the tent first (usually after seeing the first star - Venus and planets don't count) and Lex really enjoys staying up late and looking at constellations. In the morning though, Lex will sleep in and Lukie is always the first up...
The end of day two was a quiet night, though I'm not sure what Lukie was doing in the tent by himself...
